Dominiquetiu 's Thoughts:

As useful “layering” is to tons of fashionistas out there, it is also a bit very tricky because a lot of considerations come into play. Here are my foolproof tips:

1. For the first layer, since this piece will serve as your outfit’s foundation, you should opt for something that’s more fitted than the ones on top. Make sure that it fits you like a glove to start off with a slim silhouette. Remember, as you pile on more layers, the wider/frumpier one might appear when you don’t do it right.
2. I’m big on “balanced proportions” and with pairing outfits, when you opt for a top that is long, then you should pair it with a shorter bottom, or if it were a loose top then the bottom should be fitted and vice versa–of course, it doesn’t apply to every single outfit but it is a good rule to adhere to when in doubt.
3. Experiment with different types of textures, lengths, and colors (maximum of 3) to avoid the added appearance of weight. I find that this particular tip is only applicable for layering (since I’m a fan of coordinating colors in general). It gives people a break with the silhouette that’s refreshing to the eye.
